Methodology
What we count
- Views — an article was opened. Counted once per browsing session, however often you reload.
- Reads — a view that earned it: at least 30 seconds with the page visible and at least half of it scrolled.
- Attention— visible seconds per heading, on the same anchors as each article's table of contents.
- Onward links — which internal link a reader followed off an article, tallied per target. A running count only, and only to pages this site knows; external links and same-page jumps are never recorded.
- Story tours — the furthest step a session reached; completing means reaching the final step.
- Readers — an estimate by construction: session ids are never stored, so an exact count is deliberately impossible.
What we never collect
- No cookies — the session id lives in your tab and dies with it.
- No IP addresses kept — used only in the moment, to rate-limit the beacon.
- No user agents, no fingerprints, no third parties.
- No raw events — beacons fold into the aggregates on this page and are gone.
- Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control are honoured: browsers sending either are never counted at all.
